This refers to the editorial, “Step towards reform” (November 15). The Modi Government’s surgical strike against black money, corruption and counterfeit currency, by stripping the high denomination currency notes of their statutory status, is a ‘black swan’ moment for the Indian economy. The Government must now ensure that the rigour with which investigation and prosecution against the defaulters is being carried out, is in the spirit of the High Denomination Bank Notes (Demonetisation) Act, 1978, initiated by the then Government of Morarji Desai.
The Modi Government can now ill afford to miss this opportunity to remove the economy’s ‘biggest blot’ and curb illegal financial activities in the system. Also, it is time that the Opposition, particularly the Congress, stopped indulging in parochial opportunism by using political pulpits to run a charade against the Government on the pretext of championing the ‘cause’ of the poor.
