Sir — This refers to the report, “Won’t allow Food Insecurity Bill: Jaya” (July 6). The Act is nothing but a poll gimmick of the Congress and its inept regime to appease the electorate before 2014 general election. The same trick was used by the UPA1 regime prior to the 2009 poll, when the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act was implemented — the efficacy and benefits of which remains suspect even today.
If the UPA regime’s intention is not to extract political mileage out of this latest ‘food security’ largesse, then why was it not introduced two or three years back when lakhs of people were left to starve even as thousands of tonnes of precious foodgrains rotted for want of adequate storage facilitiesIJ
