Substantial development

Sir — In his first Independence Day speech Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his dismay at the infighting in Government. He has alsp vowed to fire up the bureaucracy to deliver quick results in a country that desperately needs economic development and growth.

Mr Modi has also underlined the need for good governance. But good governance is achievable only if the Government leaders, both at the Centre and the States have proven records of leading a life of integrity in the public domain.

Elimination of poverty has also become a myth because the prices of essential commodities and services are soaring high. Rise in income is not commensurate with the rise in monthly expenditure. Freedom has come to politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen so that they may make money without any impediments. Money earned through unfair means escape the tax net as well.

Mr Modi’s other concern that parents do not question their sons taking to criminal activities is important. But are truant sons really under the control of their parentsIJ The rule of law must prevail in such cases. Also, violence against women cannot be stopped unless there are strict laws against offenders.

The justice delivery system has to revamped as well. The Modi Government should ensure that the pace of justice delivery is quickened, if there has to be any substantial improvement in maintaing law and order.
