Sir — Mr Mahinda Rajapaksa’s failure in his bid for a third term as President, brings to an end a decade of rule that critics say had become increasingly authoritarian and marred by nepotism and corruption, with several members of his family holding key positions of power. It is ironical that Mr Rajapaksa had been defeated by Mr Maithripala Sirisena; a one-time ally who defected recently and derailed what the then President had thought would be an easy win.
With the election over, Sri lanka has to move forward. After all, there are no permanent enemies or permanent friends in politics. There is bound to be a re-alignment of political forces shortly, with some more crossovers. Foes will become friends and vice versa.
