This refers to the editorial, “Kashmir’s political conundrum” (November 16) by Khursheed Wani. Braving arsonists, threats from separatists and the four-month-long shutdown, it is encouraging to learn that an overwhelmingly large number of children have turned up for their board examinations in Kashmir. It now appears that a majority of parents wanted their children to be in schools, attending classes and preparing for the academic pursuit for dignified careers. They must have watched haplessly as school after school was burnt. An outcry of ‘save schools’ played a great role in encouraging the students to take the route to schools once again.
After the killing of Burhan Wani, education has become a big casualty as disturbances erupted mainly due to the misreading and mishandling of the situation by the administration. The separatist leaders have the attitude of professional agitators; the parents have a personal, genuine concern about their wards’ future. For now, the students have made a statement.
