Sir — This refers to the editorial, “A peaceful roadmap” (August 5). Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj’s restrained and dignified response, as demonstrated in her statement in Parliament, is in sharp contrast to the Chinese threats to India for the last several weeks to “vacate its territory or be ready for the consequences” of a possible war.
It is mystifying as to how a country, that should be so beholden to us for what our leadership had done for it from its birth as the communist neighbour, to make it globally acceptable. As Swaraj recalled, we have opened our doors to China in various crucial sectors of our economy. Yet, Beijing behaves as if we are worst enemies.
Hopefully, there are some indications that moderate elements in the Chinese society are of late talking about peaceful resolution of our bilateral problems through dialogue. Chinese Consulate-General in Kolkata, Ma Zhanwu has come out with a friendly approach; let us see if this attitude is further reflected by other Chinese sources.
