The US’s change of heart over various aspects of the civil nuclear deal is because of the fact that the world's largest democracy, India, is now governed by a strong regime, led by a party that has an absolute majority on its own, and has achieved remarkable successes in many areas. Otherwise also, having closer ties and friendship with India is in the interests of the US, because India is the strongest consumer-base, importing a large number of commodities from US-based companies at a time when that country is facing an economic challenge and needs to generate jobs and revenue internally.
But any secret deal contrary to India's interests can harm the country. There had been apprehensions that the undesired cut in excise duty on cars in India by the earlier UPA Government was extended to December 31 last year by the ruling BJP regime, to boost the struggling automobile industry of the US.
