Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s belated attempt to address himself to the sullen mood in the valley should send a message that the Indian democracy is capable to dissolve resentments and grievances. Clearly, the separatists cannot be pleased with Modi putting all the Indians on the same footing as the Kashmiris nor his appeal is unlikely to be heeded by the separatists whose actions are dictated by their Inter-Services Intelligence minders in Pakistan. The people of Kashmir need to be given a credible fig leaf to spurn the separatist’s fake righteousness.
