This refers to the report, “Maximum city's maximum shame” (August 24).
The brutal gang rape of a young photojournalist, out on an assignment, in Mumbai, brings back the horror of a similar crime in Delhi on the night of December 16, last year. The incident is yet another blot on the country, and especially on cosmopolitan Mumbai which was considered to be a safe city for women. It has also clearly demonstrated that be it Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, lucknow or remote latehar, women, girls even tiny three-year olds in this country, are unsafe; that for their own safety they must think a thousand times before stepping out of their homes.
If reports are anything to go by, every hour there is an incident of rape/sexual assault, and most of the time the incident goes unreported. Should the alarming frequency of cases of sexual assault not prod the Government to take firm steps to quell crimes of this natureIJ Bringing in legislation to deal with such crimes is not enough. Proper police investigation and expeditious disposal of such cases by fast-track courts is the need of the hour.
