Sir — This refers to the report, “Sonu Nigam shaves off his head to protest fatwa” (April 20). Fatwas are nothing but open declaration to take law in the hands by those who having issued such orders. There should be a provision for punishment and fine of double the amount of fatwa, with maximum punishment of life imprisonment in case they require murder of a person.
Noted singer Sonu Nigam objected to the use of loudspeakers by a religious place in contradiction of a justified order by the Supreme Court asking a complete ban of loud-speakers between 10 pm and 6 am. Evidently, such unauthorised use of loud-speakers in odd hours also violates constitutional provision of right to sleep. Religion was there in ancient times too when loudspeakers were not invented. The Union Government must issue directives to States to strictly enforce the apex court’s order on the use of loud-speakers.
