Still in the dark ages

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “let law take its course” (September 4). You are right in taking a balanced position in the Asram Bapu case. But one must mention that it took 15 years and the dastardly murder of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar, for the Maharashtra Government to promulgate an Ordinance to bring social awakening and awareness in society, and create a healthy and safe social environment to protect people against the sinister practices of religious conmen.

Worse, politicians pander to so-called men-of-god which has led to the proliferation of such charlatans. Even in the Asaram Bapu case, there was a marked hesitation to take immediate action against the man. The Government owes it to the people to enact laws where godmen of all hues do not have an open field to exploit the religious sentiments of the gullible.
