Sir — This refers to the article, “Poribortan that Bengalis never really wanted” (July 12) by Anirban Ganguly. The pogrom at Basirhat in North 24 Parganas district reflects the complete breakdown of law and order system in West Bengal. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has failed to take strict action against the fringe elements, but blamed the BJP for it. The perpetrators of violence and murderers of Hindus alike are still on the loose. It seems that Banerjee is so much concerned about minority appeasement that she didn’t try to protect the lives of the Hindus in peril. There must be harsh punishment for those who are responsible for this heinous crime and the death of innocents.
