State elections: Ruling parties on the backfoot

Published on:

This refers to the editorial, “High electoral stakes” (March 7). The situation appears to be dicey for ruling parties in Tamil Nadu, Assam and Kerala. However, the Trinamool Congress appears to hold the aces in West Bengal. That said, efforts of the BJP to gain foothold in West Bengal may materialise to a large extent. In Kerala, the United Democratic Front may well be on its way out with a plethora of scams. Allegations against Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in the solar scam may prove to be the last straw for the UDF.

In Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has failed to cash in on the sympathy wave following her conviction and subsequent release in the assets case. Though she may not lose badly, it is almost certain that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is on a recovery path. Interestingly, it is Assam which promises to offer a direct battle between two principal parties, the BJP and the Congress. The BJP has had an eagle's eye on the State with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's soft corner towards the North-East.
