Bollywood actor Madhuri Dixit is in the dock for endorsing Maggi noodles as a healthy food for children. Now, it has been found that the product contains dangerous levels of zinc and has crossed the allowed limits of monosodium glutamate. Many successful film stars became brand ambassadors, but this case underlines how the ethics of advertising must be maintained. For example, film star Kareena Kapoor deserves to be complimented for refusing to endorse meat products as she herself has turned vegetarian. Similarly, Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan also turned down an offer to endorse a soft drink which, as we all know, can be bad for health.
Before endorsing a product, the actor must be satisfied that it has no harmful effects. Also, he/she should genuinely believe in the product's goodness. This may not be a legal requirement but it should be a moral responsibility. Before the stars make any claims about a product, they should get certificates from competent authorities, declaring that the claims are correct.
