Sir — This refers to the article, “Where have all the Pirs and Sufi saints goneIJ” (April 18) by Gautam Mukherjee. The author’s lament at the near-extinction of all Pirs and Sufi saints, the rise of Sunni puritanism and intolerance under the influence of Saudi Wahhabism is perfectly justified. He has done well to charge the ruling Congress of indulging in lip-service to the Muslim community, adding insult to injury by offering platitudes during election time and ignoring them later.
Ironically, despite the brouhaha over Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP’s supposedly ‘communal’ outlook, it is in Gujarat that the Muslims have prospered the most. Muslims of Gujarat have acknowledged this by voting wholeheartedly for Mr Modi. Need one say moreIJ
