This refers to the high drama witnessed at a Press conference organised by the Delhi Commission for Women recently on the matter of Aam Aadmi Party’s Kumar Vishwas. Congress-supporter and Commission head Barkha Singh was publicly confronted by a member, Juhi Khan, who was termed by Ms Singh as an AAP volunteer. Media reports also indicate that Ms Khan was a Congressperson at the time of her appointment. Controversies apart, the entire episode has exposed the working of members of such commissions according to their respective political affiliations or mindsets.
It should be ensured that Chairpersons and other members of these commissions should be non-political and totally unbiased. They must be selected through a transparent process and through consensus between the ruling party and the main Opposition in the lok Sabha or the State Assembly, as the case may be. A beginning can be made by the re-constitution of the Delhi Commission for Women.
