Sir — India should have more States for effective administration. It would be better to form the States on a topographical basis rather than on linguistic considerations. The State capital should not be more than 200km from the farthest point on the border of that State.
We have seen the problems of having the State capital far away. I, for example, have to travel 500km to Bhubaneswar — a 12-hour journey from where I live. India now has 29 States, including the yet-to-be-created-but-cleared Telangana. All the Union Territories should be converted into States. Jammu & Kashmir should be divided into Jammu, Kashmir and ladakh; Rajasthan into west and east Aravalli; and Uttar Pradesh should be divided into the new States of Purvanchal, Harit Pradesh and Bundelkhand. Similarly, there should be a State of Gorkhaland. The demand for a new State of Vidarbha in Maharashtra should also be met.
