This refers to the editorial, “Minister's tantrum” (April 30). I contest the views expressed in the editorial that Uttar Pradesh Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mohammad Azam Khan deliberately created a scene at the logan International Airport in Boston with the minority vote-bank on his mind.
Mr Khan already enjoys an enormous following and standing in the community, and the thumping victory and return of the Samajwadi Party last year is proof of that.
His public persona of an angry leader notwithstanding, even his detractors vouch for his honesty. Equating his case with those of others who were frisked by the US officials at various airports in the past, seems way off the mark, as Mr Khan was accompanying Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on an invite to attend a Harvard University event.
Moreover, we Indians belong to a culture where even invited enemies/detractors are welcomed, and slighting a guest is considered unacceptable behaviour. let’s not forget that.
