Sir — This refers to the report, “Praful Patel goes soft on Modi” (January 30). There are two issues to the 2002 incident of violence in Gujarat. The first, as rightly pointed out by Mr Praful Patel, is that if the judiciary has given clean a chit to Mr Narendra Modi, then opportunist politicians and NGOs should stop making a demon out of him.
The second issue is that Mr Modi’s critics rarely raise the matter of innocent Hindus being burnt alive in a train at Godhra by a mob. This is what led to the unfortunate violence. Even in 2002, a large number of Hindus were killed. It seems we are to be reminded of violence only against the Muslims. Communal violence is bad, but it is not Hindus alone who commit it and it is not Muslims alone who suffer due to it.
