Sincere efforts needed to define minority rights

Published on:

This refers to the editorial, “Defining the minority” (March 29). It seems improper that an important issue has eluded definition all these years, regardless of injustice caused to the communities concerned . The cases of Jammu & Kashmir and some North-East States are particularly relevant. For example, is it fair that the majority community in Jammu & Kashmir — the Muslims constituting 68 per cent of the population of the State — continues to enjoy benefits of the minority prescribed in the total Indian context, but the minority in the State — the Hindus — is denied the minority-specific privileges on the plea that the Hindus belong to the majority in the national perspectiveIJ

I strongly feel that it is high time this serious anomaly and resultant injustice is sorted out without further delay. This should also happen where Christians, the minority group in the country, are in majority but still get the minority benefits.
