Silence is not always the best policy

This refers to the editorial, “Credibility matters” (August 14). The whole issue of the allegedly murky land deal involving Mr Robert Vadra must be viewed from the angle of propriety and decorum. While one must concede that just because he happens to be the son-in-law of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, he cannot stop conducting his business, it is also a fact that Mr Vadra cannot escape questions which have put his land deals under the spotlight.

The entire matter smacks of opacity, which is a worrying factor. The Congress's fierce defence of Mr Vadra does not hold water. And a thorough probe must be carried out to clear his role in the issue. The Congress president should prevail upon the Government to institute a probe to cover the whole gamut of the land deal. With elections round the corner, she should speak on the issue and put to rest the growing impression that her party is defending the indefensible.
