Shun brutality

Sir — This refers to the report, “Dalit rage singes India, 8 killed” (April 3). It is becoming increasingly evident that Dalit radicals are resorting to violence and arson at the filmiest of grounds, in protest against perceived insults and sporadic incidents. In the latest case, the radical Dalit violence in several places was triggered by a totally false and thoughtless misinterpretation of the recent Supreme Court judgement on the alleged ‘dilution’ of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act which directed that there would be “no automatic arrest” on any complaint  without “preliminary enquiry by the police within seven days before taking any action”. Is this not a very legitimate and fair provisionIJ How can any one be arrested by a mere complaint by an interested party against an opponentIJ

All politicians who are insisting on a review of the apex court order seem to be playing vote-bank politics. It will do no good to the image of the Modi Government to play footsie with Dalit radicals and not condemn violence and killings on a fake Dalit cause.
