This refers to the news report, “Political class in Naxal shock & awe” (May 27).
Words fall short to condemn the recent ghastly Maoist attack in Chhattisgarh on the Congress party’s convoy in which at least two dozen persons, including top State leaders of the party, were killed and many injured. Maoist violence is not the problem of a single State or party, and it is one of the gravest internal security challenges. However, despite similar attacks in the past, both the Union and the State Governments have failed to formulate a proper anti-Maoist strategy. These social renegades have amply proved that their fight is not for the tribal cause, as they and their sympathisers claim, but to uproot democratically-elected Governments.
It is time for all political parties to realise the gravity of the matter, rise above blame-game politics and come together to work out a two-pronged strategy to meet the Maoist challenge — expedite development in tribal areas and simultaneously combat the marauding rebels. Only a concerted effort can succeed.
