Shrewd judgement

Sir — This refers to editorial, “Yes to data privacy” (August 25). The nine-judge bench of the Supreme Court has pronounced privacy as a fundamental right. The court did put the onus on the Government to treat specific cases with sensitivity and choose to not intrude upon the citizen’s privacy.

For instance, some of the contentious Aadhaar linkages may now be contested to be taken up for scrutiny. To that extent, the Government will now need to be sagacious, which can but add strength to the sinews of any progressive democracy. This judgement is significant to the extent that the Government may well be an intrusive but well-meaning surgeon using a scalpel, but not one with a cleaver, impatiently suspecting gangrene in every case.
