Sharapova remains guilty regardless of confession

This refers to the editorial, “Disturbing revelations” (March 11). Maria Sharapova's honest confession about consuming the banned drug Meldonium, is a wake-up call for players of all sport disciplines as well as the authorities. Tennis largely escaped from the clutches of anti-doping authorities due to ineffective supervision and lax guiding principles. Meldonium is known to enhance performance, boost endurance and protect against stress.

Sharapova has claimed that she was using the drug for the past 10 years to make-up for her magnesium deficiency and family history of diabetes mellitus whereas experts advocate only a few week of its therapeutic use. She has feigned innocence about Meldonium being banned by the world anti-doping agency from January this year. However, tennis authorities claim they had sent five e-mails to all players regarding the same. Though her own admission appears sincere, mere confession of a wrong-doing, knowingly or unknowingly, cannot absolve the tennis ace of her grave blunder.
