Sham secularism

Published on:

Sir — The case of gender bias and criminal exploitation of Muslim women due to the practice of triple talaq which could easily have been decided by any court of law has been deliberately delayed by the Supreme Court of India. Even after a broad consensus, the Supreme Court chose to constitute a five-judge (religiously divided) Bench to hear the case, neglecting women participation on the Bench.

Including the All India Muslim Personal law Board and inviting Congress leader Salman Khurshid, who has no locus standi, the court is now faced with opinions of these elements who have not just been supportive of the practice but also have a dogmatic view. Given the situation, it may be that the Bench will have to balance out the contradictory opinions. It could led to a split verdict or a clear ruling in one party’s favour. One can only hope for the best. Sham secularism by triple talaq backers is on full display in the court.
