Sexist comments

Sir — This refers to JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav once again making a deliberately controversial statement on daughters of India, wherein he said that any loss of prestige of daughters is loss of prestige for the streets or cities where they live. His comparison between prestige of daughters and the streets was totally uncalled for, because the two are not comparable.

Sharad Yadav is known for making insulting remarks for women of India which, though being a significant part of of population, have unfortunately remained subdued in a male-dominated society. Politicians such as Sharad Yadav are a hindrance to women getting their legitimate right of 33 per cent reservation in legislatures. Sharad Yadav had also once used the term, “parkati” for women demanding reservations. He had also commented adversely on the complexion of south India women, apart from remarking in an undignified manner on Union Minister Smriti Irani.

It is indeed unfortunate that our political system allows such politicians to remain in the legislatures. It is high time that the Supreme Court and the National Commission for Women takes cognisance of regular women-insulting remarks.
