This refers to the news report, “Saina's All England dream dashed” (March 9). Her defeat was agonising for lakhs of Indians who followed the match on television. It was a case of a slip between the cup and the lip for Saina Nehwal. After dominating the All England championship till the finals, and in total command in the first half of the all-important finals, she let the match slip away. While she appeared short of stamina, the younger and fitter Spanish Carolina Marin triumphed.
The temperamental and grunting ways of the Spanish also appeared to have unsettled the Indian star. However, Nehwal deserves applause for becoming the first Indian woman to enter the finals of the most prestigious tournament in the game. Where does she go from hereIJ She still has a few years of good badminton ahead. The painful loss should spur the gritty Indian to come back strongly in the coming years.
