Sensible suggestion

Sir — This refers to the news report, “Now, Katju wants minimum qualification for scribes”(March 13). Press Council of India chairperson Justice (retired) Markandey Katju’s observation about fixing a minimum qualification for journalists, is spot on. If a basic professional qualification is a must for entering professions like teaching, medicine and law, why not for journalismIJ

The fourth estate is an important pillar of democracy. Its role  in ensuring transparency and probity in public life and governance cannot be under-estimated, especially because its approach to various issues of national import has a direct bearing on influencing the opinion of the masses.

The committee set up by Mr Katju is a good step and must be welcomed. The panel will decide on the minimum qualification that young aspirants to the profession must meet. This will teach the students about the significance of their chosen profession and the responsibilities that come with the job.
