This refers to the editorial, “A stunned Opposition” (February 27) and the article, “Country bleeds while the liberals look away” (February 27) by Ashutosh Misra. It was heartening to read these write-ups because of their strident refutation of the Opposition charges leveled by Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati, Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma and CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury, against the Union Government.
The Opposition’s attack on Union Minister for Human Resource Development Smriti Irani for displaying a poster on the celebration of “the martyrdom” of demon king Mahishasur and denigraton of goddess Durga at the Jawaharlal Nehru University by a group of students, seemed as condoning the reprehensible act. Was Ms Irani not right to underline the evil mindset of a small section of JNU students, in addition to the students’ shouting seditious, anti-Indian slogansIJ The article, on the other hand, has justified the sedition law due to the complex nature of Indian politics and secessionist tendencies.
