Secular debate

Published on:

Sir — This refers to National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah saying that those who vote for Mr Narendra Modi should drown in the sea, and Mr Modi’s response that the biggest blow to secularism in India was delivered in Kashmir from where Kashmiri Pandits were forced out due to their religion.

The meaning of ‘secularism’ and ‘communalism’ can be easily found in any dictionary; but these words have been twisted and misinterpreted by politicians for several years since Independence, for the creation of vote banks.

We live in a democratic country; hence, it is desirable to know what our people want. The real meaning of controversial terms should be left exclusively to our people who are likely to express their preference on May 16.
