This refers to the editorial, “Mankind’s true enemies” (May 27). The editorial explicitly describes the destruction of human heritage by the Islamic State in Palmyria city of Syria near its capital Damascus and earlier at Mosul in Iraq. No doubt these were one of the important heritage treasure sites containing the architecture of Greek, Roman and Persian cultures of the past. The IS tyranny in respect of destruction of heritage and culture is not only deplorable but also uncalled far. But the world is looking at these happenings in a pessimistic way.
Basically, what we are seeing is a Shia-Sunni conflict wherein the IS, the Al Qaeda and the Taliban are fighting on the supposed behalf of Sunnis whose power-centre is Saudi Arabia. On the other hand, the Hezbollah and similar others seek to represent the Shia population whose power-centre is Iran. Nobody knows how far this senseless war will go on. Meanwhile, the world watches helplessly.
