Science forums must focus on innovation

This refers to the editorial, “Scientific temperament” (January 12). Indian Science Congress sessions have always had their share of brickbats. last year's Mumbai edition too was in the news for all the wrong reasons. Conferences like the ISC are platforms for scholars and scientists to get together and discuss problems affecting science in India. Since they are not bona fide wings to undertake and promote research, their views cannot be taken at face value. That said, congregations like the ISC have the onerous responsibility to maintain and boost the existing scientific temperament.

The sessions should lay stress on innovation and originality in science. Prestigious meets like the ISC should act as an intermediary between scientific institutions and the Government. As far as possible, politics and politicians should not be allowed to bask in the limelight at the cost of science. Also, the all-important issue of fund-crunch that has been hitting science research in India, should catch the attention of policymakers.
