Saving rivers

Published on:

Sir —This refers to the article,  “Yamuna stagnant despite third Action Plan” (November 15) by Sandhya Jain. Pollution is a scary global issue and the author has rightly established this fact by saying that India is the worst affected by this menace.

Factory-made impurities, especially chemical effluent, contaminate the rivers. The myriad measures adopted by the Government to improve the situation, is indeed insufficient.

On the other hand, people’s belief in religious rituals override the tenets of sacredness of our rivers. Merely spending billions sans any conspicuous progress in such projects is meaningless. Our religious scholars/unbiased intelligentsia should advice the people to desist from practices which diminish the purity of our rivers.
