Save cricket's dignity

Sir — This refers to the news report, “BCCI sets up probe panel” (May 20). It is very unfortunate to note that the Board of Control for Cricket in India, instead of going into the basic causes that are bringing the great game to disrepute, is defending the continuation of the Indian Premier league format by proposing to take certain anti-corruption measures.

One look at the IPl in its present form is sufficient to figure out that it is less of cricket and more of exhibition of glamour, filthy lucre and its attendant vices. It is still more distressing to note that senior cricketers are themselves becoming a part of the grand circus called the IPl.

Given the recent spot-fixing scam, the role of big money and the shocking revelations that ‘escorts’ were used to honey-trap players, it has become even more imperative to have a re-look at the IPl format so that cricket remains a gentleman’s game that it once was, and is not reduced to a cheap road show.
