Sasikala's moment

Published on:

Sir — After the demise of its charismatic leader J Jayalalithaa, there is unease in Tamil Nadu politics. Going by the rulebook, the anointment of VK Sasikala, by the MlAs of AIADMK, as their leader in the Assembly, cannot be faulted. The Governor has little option but to swear her in, as Chief Minister. That she must get elected as an MlA within six months, is the sole proviso, but that is in the future.

The entire issue thus relates to her lesser stature on date, to step into the far bigger shoes of Jayalalithaa. Constitutional tenets must stand isolated from perceptions. There are a number of one-person parties that periodically come to power and may well face similar predicament, unless they evolve democratically within.
