Safeguarding interests

Sir — The objective of the Indus Water Treaty, concluded between India and Pakistan in 1960, during the premiership of Jawaharlal Nehru, was to allow the flow of waters of three western rivers to Pakistan for flourishing and enriching their agricultural production and fulfill other basic necessities.

It was expected that the agreement would strengthen bonds between the two countries. But now Pakistan has been sworn enemy and inveterate hater of India and unleashes unrest and violence through act of terrorism.

India has every right to abrogate or amend the provision of the treaty if it becomes a stumbling block to its national interest. Of course, the construction of the long-awaited hydro project in Kashmir may not choke the flow of waters to Pakistan and even if it does, India should not roll back its proposal for the aforesaid project.
