Rule of law is a must to prevent mob justice
Published on:

This refers to the editorial, “Anti-lynching law” (July 19). The menace of mobocracy blatantly reveals how law and order has almost ceased to exist in the country. It seems that no one is fearful of the consequences of his/her act. However, the audacity of the brutes is bound to increase because of the extremely low conviction rates. Apart from the law and order factor, the degradation of Indian mindset has also contributed towards increased ‘mob justice’. Perhaps due to rampant corruption, unemployment, domestic problems and fierce competition in educational institutions, offices and other sectors; common people have become a frustrated lot. They do not possess the moral courage or unity to protest against the evil forces.

So whenever a ‘soft target’ emerges, pent-up frustrations are let out on that individual who is often found to be innocent. The situation has come to such a pass that it has almost become a ‘sin’ to be weak and vulnerable. By drawing inspiration from the adage of ‘might is right’, the public shamelessly takes the side of those who wield muscle power. In this dismal scenario where might of law does not evoke fear, the vulnerable lot are treated with contempt and public prefer to look the other way instead of protesting against tortures. Unless the rule of law is practically restored, the situation will become much more dreadful in the coming days.
