Rotten system to blame

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Good scheme gone bad” (July 19).

The alleged lapses under the mid-day meal scheme, that are spilling out are symptomatic of every ailment that afflicts the system at a time the country is preparing to launch an unparalleled project to feed the poor. The food security campaign is expected to become a key plank on which the 2014 general election will be fought.

There are reports that it was probably contaminated mustard oil that rendered the food poisonous and caused the deaths. Adulteration and sub-standard goods are some of the biggest problems facing most schemes piloted by the Government.

Schemes in India are often seen as being crafted to help cronies and middlemen more than the targeted groups. The Saran tragedy brings into focus the lack of attention State Governments attach to the health and well-being of children. The scheme cannot be allowed to play havoc with the health and life of even one child, let alone scores of innocent ones.
