This refers to the editorial, “Making our roads safer” (April 13). Road safety norms in India are not being implemented in toto and the laws meant to be administered for the purpose are hamstrung. Even the law enforcement authorities are saleable for a paltry sum of money, when the defaulters bribe them for an easy go. The harassment by the police doesn't encourage citizen to take a proactive role in containing road safety violations.
Sensitisation is lacking, and if an authority is asking a driver to halt, the opposite happens. Out of sheer fear, the driver tries to escape by detouring or accelerating due to the trepidation of unnecessary torment. The overhaul process of road safety norms has to be at every phase — from the driving licence issuance to traffic police modernisation. The driving licencing procedure must involve classroom sessions and training for road safety norms, traffic controllers must use state-of-the-art technologies like drones and laser scanners to grab the defaulters and bring them to book.
