This is with reference to the report, “Backroom boy comes upfront” (October 22). Sixty-year-old Manohar lal Khattar will be the first BJP Chief Minister of Haryana. An organisational man, he is a first-time MlA. He is acceptable to all aspirants. This is a rare case of a public service veteran who could reach to the top on his debut election, like Mr Narendra Modi who was never elected to Parliament earlier. This is only possible in this country where a silent, unassuming, unknown but capable person can reach the highest position.
For the first time, I had seen an unknown MlA become the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in the seventies, but only with unexpected support from top Janata Party leaders after the 1977 election. This was nothing surprising, since the Congress political culture of many years prevailed even in the Janata Party's rule. Mr Khattar deserves full praise for the success. Now he must deliver.
