Former Mumbai Police Commissioner MN Singh must be complimented for highlighting the hurt emotions of the general public on the delivery of justice in the hit-and-run case involving celebrity film star Salman Khan. He said that “even today in this country the under-privileged find it difficult to get justice. It's very difficult to punish the rich and wealthy”. The rich and the celebrity manage indefinitely-delayed conviction and small or no jail-term with the help of top legal brains that the poor and the ordinary citizens cannot afford.
The Mumbai High Court's verdict, suspending the five-year jail-term of the actor, was along expected lines. Much was said about the charity work Salman Khan has been doing, as a ground for his acquittal or reduced term. The celebrity-actor should spend some money as charity on lawyers who can file PIls in favour of the 2.78 lakh undertrials in the country, to help them get bail.
