Review reservations

Published on:

Sir — This refers to the Supreme Court observation on October 26 rightly querying the Central Government on not adopting principle of phasing out categories of creamy layer from the benefits of reservation. If reservation is to be continued indefinitely, all reserved categories like SC, ST and OBC should be merged into one single category with an annual review of progress or benefits made by different sections of reserved categories by virtue of quotas.

Communities with creamy layers may be deleted from reserved categories, thus leaving opportunities for the really deserving members of backward categories. Further, benefits of reservations may be reserved for families with only two children. The present system lets rich politicians (and their familymembers) from reserved categories enjoy fruits of the reservationpolicy despite their being ultra-rich and influential in politics and society.
