Revamp the police force

Sir — This refers to the article, “Unable to bell the cat, we pass the buck” (April 29) by Joginder Singh.

The police has a vital role to play in any society in tackling crime and maintaining law and order. India is no exception. Our country has transformed itself from being a police state (in British times) to a welfare state. Police personnel, though expected to be gender sensitive, co-operative, efficient, effective and having respect for human rights, still suffer from a colonial hangover.
The need of the hour is for an overhaul of the entire system and a much-needed transformation of the force on an urgent basis. With increasing crime and its complexity, the police needs to be well-equipped in tackling the challenges through better arms and ammunition, advanced intelligence gathering system, modern technology and improved infrastructure. We need a holistic development of our police so that the latter is seen as a friend. Better policing will lead to a better nation.
