Revamp jail security across the country

Published on:

This refers to the editorial, “Flaws in prison security” (November 30). Though  Khalistan liberation Force chief Harminder Singh Mintoo was nabbed within 24 hours of the daring Nabha jail-break, the clinical precision with which the Khalistani militant group members hoodwinked the police, raises serious questions on the ability of our jail to secure highly guarded prisons. The frequency with which jail-breaks have taken place in the country over the last few months, is of serious concern. One such incident happened in Bhopal earlier.

An eagle's eye has to be kept on the easy access to external masquerading elements. All intelligence inputs and informer-alerts should be taken with due seriousness.  The deep-rooted politician-police-mafia-prisoner nexus, a common cause for the jail-breaks, has to be broken. Enhanced funds for top-class, foolproof maintenance of buildings cannot be stressed more. The findings of old inquiry commission reports, which are often brushed under the carpet, should be paid heed to.
