Respecting nature

This refers to the editorial, “After Chennai deluge, the many challenges” (December 4). Even as the Government gears up to attract global investors through its Make in India campaign, a fresh spell of rain is bleeding a key manufacturing hub, Chennai. The past decade saw Chennai grow into a thriving metropolis of glass and steel. However, as we become rich and our technologies improve, we tend to lose respect for nature.

Moreover, cities and towns in Karnataka are no better facilitated by the annual ritual of the Government ‘regularising’ unauthorised construction. A stamp of approval on paper does not change the reality on ground. That said, it was reassuring that Prime Minister Narendra Modi went Chennai to take stock of the flood situation. This gesture must now be followed up by an elaborate plan to fix infrastructure, environmental imbalances and civic amenities.
