Respecting foreigners

Published on:
Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Stop the racial attacks” (March 31). African nationals in India frequently face discrimination and even violence, especially in the capital city. While on the one hand, we express concerns over hate-crimes against Indian nationals in other countries, like the US and Australia. On the other, it is shameful that African nationals are facing a similar situation back home.
It is commendable that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is trying hard to establish strong bilateral relationships with countries round the world. However, such incidents show us in poor light. India is a country where we believe in the philosophy of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ (guests are god). Hence, it is essential that we respect our guests and foreign nationals.
