Sir — This refers to the article “Decoding Prime Minister’s Independence Day speech” (August 18) by Rajnath Singh. The veracity of Union Minister for Home Affairs, Rajnath Singh’s endorsement of the Prime Ministers public address from the ramparts of the Red Fort on this Independence Day, obviously listing his Government’s achievements during this period, cannot be questioned, given Singh’s public persona as an upstanding leader who, unlike so-called firebrands, never speaks just for the sake of it.
Singh holds the novelty and value that endears him beyond party lines and, thus, makes him stand out among his own party colleagues, as every word he utters seems well-meaning. But surprisingly, this draws a blank on the incidents of violence stemming from moral policing, vigilantism and vandalism by fringe groups, empowered by his party, claiming scores of human lives with no regard for the law, despite the Union Government insisting on maintaining the country’s age-old communal harmony.
