Resolving problems

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Bitter agrarian distress” (June 8). The death of five farmers who were protesting in Madhya Pradesh is unfortunate. Though a judicial inquiry has been ordered but both the State Governments of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra and also the local police need to ensure that peace returns at the earliest.
For a change, both the States have to deal with over production, which means that we as a country are not equipped to handle both the extremes. Given that agriculture forms the backbone of our economy, it is high time that we address all issues that concerns our farmers.
The Government must think beyond farm loan waivers and think of an out-of-the-box solution like making cold storage available; making global markets accessible to our farmers so that they are not just dependent on local consumption.
