Resettling the big cats

Published on:

Sir — This refers to the article, “They are the country’s pride” (May 8) by Prerna Singh Bindra.

I have just visited the Sasan Gir lion Sanctuary, and I was really touched by the tolerant attitude of the locals towards ‘their’ lions, despite the fact that the cats venture out of the sanctuary. The biggest fear about translocating big cats is their unwillingness to shift and settle in unknown and hostile environments, resulting in their trying to get back to their original territory. There have been numerous incidents of big cats wandering off, feeling disoriented and lost in human habitation where they are butchered.

Has the human population around the proposed sanctuary been trained and educated about this royal beast, which has so far enjoyed full freedom and protection from poachers and politicians at GirIJ Who will be held accountable in case of ‘lion tragedies’IJ And will the culprits be penalisedIJ
